How to Use Clone Stamp Tool on Mac Computers

Let’s face it, you can’t always ensure that the photos you take are completely perfect. There are so many things that can go wrong that making a perfect photo straight out of your camera is nearly impossible at times. Maybe the lighting is not right, or your subject decided to twitch at the very moment you pressed the shutter. Maybe the horizon is not straightened, or there is just too much noise in your photo when you open it on your computer.

In the days of film photography, these kind of issues would lead to the ruin of your efforts. Luckily, digital photography has evolved to a point that you can restore most of these issues after importing your photos into your computer. But while these kind of issues can be resolved fairly easily at times, there are others that can mean certain doom for your photos. One such problem is having an unwanted object in front of your subject. In case of such an issue, there is one specific tool in Luminar that you need to familiarize yourself with; The Clone Stamp Tool.

Nothing Less than a Savior

The clone stamp tool, if used properly, can mean miracles for your images that seem to be ruined by an unwanted option, sensor dust, or any other spots. This tool essentially clones certain portions of your image to where you want. It samples the pixels from one portion of your photo and then paints it on another part of it.

This is not only great for removing objects that are ruining your photos but can also remove the small specks of sensor dust that can sometimes plague otherwise great shots.

Some Practice Needed

In order to use the clone tool to fix images on your mac, you need to be aware of how it works. It can be found in Luminar’s side toolbar where all the basic tools of the software exist. Once you have selected the clone tool, you will see your cursor turn into a crosshair. In order to remove an unwanted object from your photo, what you essentially need to do is paint a certain other part of the photo over the object so that it seems like the resulting image is seamless.

To do this, simply press down the Option key, and click with your mouse at the area that you want to clone somewhere else. Once done, all you need to do is to click and drag over the object or spot you need to remove, and Luminar will stand painting the pixels from your source point at this new position.

Fill into Objects

The clone tool can also be used to fill in the detail to parts of your photos. For example, let’s say you have the image of an old door that has some parts of it missing, but you want to show the door as it once was. In order to do this you would have to ‘fill in’ those parts that have been broken or removed from the door. Using the same process as mentioned before, the clone tool can help you fill in the detail in these ‘empty’ portion of your image and lead to the creation of a seemingly full and unharmed door.

The amount of features Luminar provides within on program, and the quality of its various tools is quite unmatched in the world of image editing. There are other programs available for Mac computers as well that can help you clone objects in your photos or paint over certain portions, but none are as powerful or as well-tuned for these purposes than Luminar. So the next time you are taking quick photos and realize that something unwanted has found its way in your frame, you can be sure that relying on the excellent clone stamp tool in Luminar is capable of saving your image.
